Lee Good evening, and welcome to Horror. I'm Lee.
Chris I'm Chris.
Adam I'm Adam.
Lee Uh sorry, I went into that a little bit quickly and caught everybody slightly off guard.
Lee Um so, we are here to discuss as it is our Halloween or nearest to Halloween episode, um we are here to discuss Halloween from 1978, which as we mentioned last time, we haven't yet watched.
Chris That seems surprising.
Lee I think it's one of those I don't want to get too much into it, but for me it's one of
Lee like I I've said before so many times, I love a slow burn film, but they're not the ones I go back to time and time again.
Lee They're the ones that resonate with me, but I'm less likely to just sit there and like, you would think of it and go, that's the one.
Lee Yeah.
Lee I'm going to watch Row baby, like I just don't.
Adam They're the ones
Chris Oh, you keep you keep dropping that hint, it's like that is getting built up and built up.
Adam That's the best.
Adam It's part of a very long list, Chris, as we sort of sit as I sit here, it's like every so often I just go, you ain't seen that, you ain't seen that. And it's yeah.
Adam But no, I know what you mean, I think the slow burn stuff, it's like that's when you're in the mood to actually watch a movie.
Adam Rather than I just need something to entertain me for an hour and a half.
Adam So.
Lee Yeah, absolutely.
Adam I think also probably because we've previously done a lot of John Carpenter, so maybe we've sort of, you know, we're we're trying to vary it up.
Adam Because I I haven't looked back with, yeah, if if for more on John Carpenter, see episode 3 Prince of Darkness, episode 6 Big Trouble in Little China.
Lee Oh, blimey.
Adam Episode 12 Halloween 3, episode 23 In the Mouth of Madness and episode 30, The Thing.
Lee Yeah, we did smash through a load of his, we did need a big 70 episode gap before we returned, I think.
Adam Yeah.
Chris I did notice them watching The Thing in this one.
Adam Yeah, the original.
Lee The original.
Chris It was it was pretty obvious because it said The Thing on the stream.
Lee And Jennifer said, oh, the original, is that any good? That's wank.
Lee Um,
Adam Yeah.
Lee But before we get into any of that, um let's have a usual weekly catchup discussion.
Lee Chris, my little darling, have you seen anything since our last episode?
Chris I I have.
Chris I decided to well, go back slightly, not that I'd really started, but um I got my PlayStation VR out of the cupboard.
Chris Which it's been there for a little while now.
Chris And I had a quick look to see what was on there and I noticed that you can now get Now TV and Netflix on there.
Chris And I thought, oh, that's interesting, let's see how that looks.
Chris Is it as good as sitting in the cinema?
Chris Um and it turned out actually not bad, it is it was quite good.
Chris At adding a little extra eeriness and um in, you know, impressiveness to the experience.
Chris And I was wondering why does it put me on edge more wearing it?
Chris I think it's because as you're watching a film and especially a horror film, it's the sense that I am the dweeb wearing some technology and there is someone behind me with a big axe or while I'm watching the horror film in the horror film.
Chris And it's like it's hard to sort of get that out of your mind that because you obviously you've got no idea what's going on around you.
Chris So.
Adam You like you can't get past the whole sort of like the suspicion that someone's there flicking the V's.
Chris Yeah.
Chris Well, yeah.
Chris At least you don't get your head chopped off with that, but yeah, it's it is a bit disconcerting.
Chris And so it does actually add, certainly at the moment, I mean, if I get used to it, fair enough, but yeah, for the moment, it's it's quite powerful.
Chris Um and so I thought as I was flicking through seeing what was on uh Now TV.
Chris One of Netflix, one of them.
Chris Um I saw Doom Annihilation.
Chris I didn't realize it had been remade again.
Chris And I thought the the one with Dwayne Johnson was it was okay if you like Doom.
Chris You know, it wasn't bad.
Chris But obviously it's not going to go down in history as a fantastic film.
Chris But I thought look, let's have a look at this, it turned out this had one star.
Chris So I thought, how could this be, you know, so much worse than the other one.
Chris This has got to be perfect film a bit of action, let's try it out on the big screen.
Chris And like and I decided it was a I decided to carry on watching it because I thought it does actually have quite a horror aspect to it.
Chris Um because you've got loads of zombies in there, um and it's quite dark and um.
Chris Yeah, a bit mysterious, bit of supernatural demons.
Chris You know, so I thought fair enough, let's carry on with this.
Chris Um like it was okay.
Chris I if you liked the original Doom game, it's not bad.
Chris It did have a bit of a feeling of being kind of a fan film.
Adam Mhm.
Chris Possibly more than a a truly, you know, polished work of art.
Chris Um so I can kind of see why it probably got the one star.
Chris Um, there are a few secrets, a few Easter eggs in there that's what made it fun.
Chris So, you know, it's it's an okay watch, but I think I definitely enjoyed it more being so immersed watching it.
Chris Um and and so yeah, so I thought where else is good, I'll do this with Halloween as well.
Lee Oh, cool.
Adam Cool.
Chris So, yeah, that's that's what I watched.
Lee Nice, I might have to um so I haven't got VR, but yeah, that would tip me more towards checking it out, I think I'd be I would be keen to see what it's like in that.
Adam Hmm.
Lee In that situation.
Chris Did you did you like the one with Dwayne Johnson in?
Lee I didn't mind it. Yeah, yeah.
Chris Okay.
Lee Um I think it was you who told me to watch it last. Oh yeah, like you say it was a it was a dumb action movie.
Lee But.
Lee It was it was a fun two hours like didn't take itself too seriously, it was a stupid movie, you knew it was a stupid movie and it just kind of went with it.
Lee So.
Lee It was quite good.
Chris That's why yeah, I'm certainly surprised that someone else had decided to to have a go at it.
Lee Maybe that's why maybe you need to save the Netflix experience because like it might detract from a film you're really trying to get into and just save it for films where you're like, I want to watch this, but it's probably going to be a bit shit.
Lee So if I give it that boost.
Lee Like that extra gimmick.
Chris Well, so I'm wondering, you know, having watched Halloween on it, I'm wondering if I could actually brave watching Sinister on it.
Chris That would be a little bit tricky, but I'm going to give it a go on every film and just see.
Adam Yeah, I think Sinister might be a bit much.
Lee Yeah.
Lee Um Adam, have you watched anything since our last meeting?
Adam Um I've watched Crumbs, which is it's the first film by the guy, you remember I told you a lot about uh Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway.
Lee Yes.
Adam Everyone got a bit excited because it's that name to say it so.
Adam Uh yeah, this was his uh first sort of post apocalyptic film um slow dreamy.
Adam I I mean, I enjoyed it, but I I think I preferred Jesus Shows Me the Shows You the Way to the Highway.
Adam Um but it's again that sort of thing of being set after an undisclosed thing that undisclosed event apocalypse end of the world.
Adam And there's a spaceship dangling in the sky and everyone trades in commodities of like pop culture ephemera like uh Ninja Turtle keyrings and Michael Jackson albums.
Lee Yeah.
Adam And uh yeah, I mean it's sort of an interesting one but I still not quite sure if I know what it was about.
Adam Oh Santa Santa Claus lived in a ball return in a bowling alley.
Adam Um,
Adam Yeah, this absolute film, yeah.
Adam On another note, though, I had to basically.
Adam You know, we don't know with the upcoming American election, there's the distinct possibility that Trump may not be in power.
Adam So, I had to show Claire The Running Man before he was before he possibly wasn't.
Adam Because I just, yeah.
Adam And um.
Adam Yeah, I haven't watched The Running Man for a long, long time.
Adam Desperately entertaining, but.
Adam Arnie's puns are rubbish like throughout.
Adam There's not a good one.
Adam I mean it really puts him in sharp relief you actually sit there going, it was better in Batman and Robin and that's fucking saying something.
Lee God.
Adam At least they at least they were possibly appropriate quips, but in The Running Man it's just, yeah.
Adam Not not much cop, but.
Adam Entertaining, you know, classic.
Chris I think of the the one I think does he shout hey Christmas tree to the air lights.
Adam Yeah, and lighthead and lighthead. Hey, lighthead.
Adam And you're like, that's not, that's not even an insult, man, that's that's a description.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Hey, long hair.
Lee Yeah.
Adam But um but the two things that struck me, one was the soundtrack.
Adam The the main theme of it, I am convinced now was the blueprint for the music to Garth Marenghi's Dark Place.
Adam And secondly, and this is one of those things that I've never quite registered for some reason.
Adam But Mick Fleetwood is in it.
Adam And he's the head of the resistance that they end up going to.
Lee Is he?
Adam Yeah, and that yeah, the old the old boy with the beard.
Adam That's Mick Fleetwood as in Fleetwood Mac.
Adam Um but I've never noticed it before.
Adam He's called Mick in the film.
Adam So I kind of think he's meant to be Mick Fleetwood in the future, which actually is 2000 is 2019 it's set in.
Lee Oh, blimey.
Adam And actually.
Chris That's one of those.
Adam Reasonably accurate, you know, food riots and game show host running the country is essentially.
Lee Yeah.
Adam You know.
Adam Um.
Lee I need to go back and rewatch that film.
Lee I've not seen it in decades.
Adam It's it really is entertaining, but not always necessarily in the way that it thinks it is.
Chris It should be.
Adam Yeah.
Adam But um.
Adam But I think you enjoyed it, didn't you, Clair?
Adam There you go.
Adam That's the yeah, Yeah.
Chris I think there are some Arnie Schwarzenegger films you everyone probably should watch.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Well, that was part of my thing where it was I showed her RoboCop as well.
Adam I think I think it's just at the moment it's like, yeah, I'll show you all the dystopias cause they've all come true.
Lee Yeah.
Chris Yeah.
Adam So.
Adam Yeah.
Adam But um I think yeah, no, there are certain Arnie essentials and I count The Running Man as an, and it is a Stephen King short story that it's based on.
Adam So it kind of uh it kind of boarders into into horror, especially because it's.
Adam You know, just it's it's the what they called the stalkers.
Adam Are just hilarious.
Adam You basically Roy D. Hulk Hogan with a fucking chainsaw, um.
Adam The enormous Japanese Ice Hockey guy.
Lee Yeah.
Adam And the opera singing electric man who is actually played by Grosberger from uh Ster Crazy.
Lee You know what, I've got tomorrow off, I think I'm going to rewatch this film.
Adam Go for it.
Adam It's seriously, you won't I can honestly say you won't regret it, even if you do regret it.
Adam And that's all the weather.
Lee Excellent.
Lee Um.
Lee So I've been carrying on with my going through my Halloween viewing.
Adam Mhm.
Lee Um so I have managed this week.
Lee Uh I started with the Halloween Tree.
Adam Oh, yeah.
Lee Because that is a staple, needed watching as I mentioned previously, it's finally come out on DVD.
Lee After me trying to get hold of it on on DVD for about 15 years, so I was massively excited when that came out.
Lee Um so I watched that, always amazing.
Lee Uh Tales from the Dark Side, I rewatched the pilot episode of that.
Lee Um it's called Trick or Treat.
Lee Uh and it is written and directed by George A. Romero.
Adam I think he did a few.
Adam I think Tobe Hooper did as well actually.
Lee Yeah.
Lee But yeah, that first one is just outstanding, it's just one of my absolute favorite like horror episodes of anything ever.
Lee Um I watched the sequel to The Babysitter.
Lee The Netflix original that I raved about when it first came out.
Adam Mhm.
Lee Um so for the sequel, uh Killer Queen, what they've done is, they've taken all the things that you really loved about the first one and then shit all over it effectively.
Lee Um.
Adam I felt that's where this review was aproaching.
Adam I was going, oh, he's just going there.
Lee It was like, it's one of those, I started making two or three notes and then I was like, this is just shit, it's not even worth me making notes about because it is so bad.
Lee Get really disappointed.
Lee The first one's fantastic, they've got all the cast back, spoiler alert, for the new one.
Lee Um so I was like, how can it possibly go wrong, it was only a year ago, same cast, it's going to be excellent.
Lee Oh, and it's just.
Chris Same same director and.
Lee Uh not sure, I was so exhausted at the end of it, I couldn't even be bothered to go and look, I just wanted it to be over and to be able to forget about it, it was terrible.
Lee Um and then the next thing, I haven't finished watching it, but I've watched most of it.
Lee Uh so those of our listeners who listened to not for everyone podcast, uh will be aware of Deep State Rex.
Adam Uh.
Lee Um Deep State Rex suggested a um Friday the 13th fan film that came out a few days ago.
Lee Um it's a Friday the 13th one as I mentioned, uh called Never Hike in the Snow.
Adam Oh yes, I saw you post about that.
Lee Like 31 minutes long, it's awesome, it's really good so I only got to see two thirds of it and then I had a phone call and I came away and I didn't get a chance to go back to it.
Lee Um.
Lee But yeah, it it looks it's really solid, it's really well written, it's really well acted, the effects and stuff are great in it, it kicks off because it's only 31 minutes like right off the bat, it's straight into kill mode.
Lee Um so yeah.
Lee I will definitely be finishing that.
Lee Um.
Lee Um so I don't know who's made it, but I'm sure when I looked at it yesterday it had some ridiculous like 58,000 views and it'd only been up for two days or something, so.
Adam What's this on YouTube?
Lee Yeah.
Lee So whoever the the fan film is made by, they've clearly already got some kind of a following because uh yeah, it's clearly already made an impression.
Lee But but quite rightly so, I say it's.
Lee It's really, really enjoyable, so uh any fans of Friday the 13th, go and check that out.
Lee And now from Friday the 13th to Halloween in close proximity as they should be.
Lee So Chris, have you seen this before?
Chris No, I've only seen Halloween 3, which is not Michael Myers.
Lee No.
Lee It's not the witch, as you said, quite right.
Chris Yeah.
Chris So yeah, now now I've seen the proper Halloween and completely makes sense why you would compare it to Friday the 13th.
Adam Yeah.
Chris So, yeah, I can.
Chris I can definitely say I absolutely see why this is considered a classic, it's got everything in it.
Chris Um I mean, obviously, to start with, you've got the amazing Donald.
Chris Not the crap Donald, and I'll just leave that hanging.
Chris I might be talking about Donald Trump or it could be Donald Duck.
Chris Who knows.
Chris Um so yeah, you know.
Adam Who doesn't love Donald, the little town sheriff.
Adam Looked in his eyes, they're they're empty, yeah.
Chris Yeah, um so so I think we've seen Donald Pleasence in definitely one other film, was it could be two, I can't remember what the second would be, though.
Adam Again, this is another one where we've we've he's been in a few, cuz yeah.
Chris Is he?
Adam Yeah.
Adam Um.
Chris But I didn't really know him properly then, though.
Adam Episode 3 Prince of Darkness.
Adam Which was obviously also a John Carpenter film.
Adam And in that he plays Father Loomis, who is presumably Dr. Loomis's brother.
Adam Um,
Adam Then in episode 24, Deathline.
Chris Yeah.
Adam Get your haircut.
Adam And I'd forgotten completely about this.
Adam Episode 68, The Uncanny.
Adam I forgot we even covered that film to be honest.
Lee Oh shit, yeah, we did, yeah, yeah.
Adam So, Donald Pleasence has appeared in two of my birthday episodes as well.
Chris Well, yeah, you can't really go wrong with him, can you?
Chris He's just something about him, he just does what he does well.
Adam He does, he does it so fucking well.
Adam But um what apparently he was um third choice.
Adam Uh John John Carpenter wanted basically John Carpenter wanted an established English horror star.
Adam So he tried Peter Cushing, he tried Christopher Lee and then he tried Donald Pleasence.
Adam And apparently Christopher Lee was after, I mean, obviously because it was just a massive success.
Adam But um so Christopher Lee was said has said has said since that he'd regretted not taking the role.
Lee I can't see him in the role, is the problem.
Lee I don't.
Adam I think he'd be a bit too stern.
Lee Yeah.
Adam You know, you get there's a there's a gentleness about Donald Pleasence even though he is.
Chris He's he's.
Chris He's telling off or like yeah.
Lee But he's been affected by it, whereas Christopher Lee can only play in power of the situation, which clearly isn't.
Lee So I don't think he'd necessarily, not to knock him, I mean he's an incredible actor, but yeah, I don't think he would have fit that role at all.
Adam And I don't I don't know how far Peter Cushing would be able to play the that other end of it, curiously enough.
Adam I don't know how far would I would you believe Peter Cushing following like his patient with the intent of shooting him?
Lee No.
Adam And it's yeah, so I think they hit they hit a very happy medium there.
Adam But apparently Donald Pleasence um basically, I mean, he's in loads of the sequels and stuff like that and obviously he did Prince of Darkness.
Adam He and John Carpenter got on really well.
Adam But apparently, yeah, when he first arrived, he said I've I've no idea about this film, but my daughter who's a musician really liked the music for your film on Precinct 13.
Lee Yeah.
Adam And so that's why I've taken it, also had a big alimony bill apparently.
Lee So.
Adam Um.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Running.
Adam Yeah, so but that's but I think he I think John Carpenter definitely right and that you need someone who can sell that.
Adam And quite rightly he's gone with the sort of thought of, well, it's got to be an established British horror actor.
Adam It's almost in the same way that, you know, no one really holds a flame against uh Ian McDermid as the emperor.
Lee Yeah.
Adam So so you've he's already fucking brilliant, but then you put in like poor Hayden Christensen, I think he's really out of his fucking depth when he's when they're playing.
Lee Hmm.
Adam And I think it's it but with this, I think everyone everyone involved with Donald Pleasence steps up and you know, because he's not really.
Adam It it's very separate, I mean, him and Laurie only really cross paths right at right at the end.
Lee And she's the only person I've seen in anything, I mean, obviously, everyone knows Jamie Lee Curtis.
Lee Um but yeah, she's the only person who from this film.
Lee I think I've ever seen in anything ever, her and Donald Pleasence are the only ones.
Adam Yeah, PJ Soles, who is oh, I can I always get my two names mixed up.
Adam Who's Linda, who is the one with her boyfriend Bob.
Lee Oh, yeah.
Adam Um, she's in Carrie.
Lee Oh, okay.
Adam She's she's normal in Carrie, she's in a few other bits and pieces.
Adam She's also in The Devil's Rejects, she's the one who um um Captain Spaulding steals her car.
Lee Oh, I remember so little about that film now.
Adam So, but yeah, so I mean she's sort of done bits and pieces, there's sort of bits and pieces.
Adam But really the only proper because you've got Donald Pleasence who's established and this is really the film that puts Jamie Lee Curtis on the map.
Adam And uh yeah, she she was great in this.
Chris Yeah, she was great in this.
Adam Yes, she is really fucking good.
Adam Especially because she was quite convinced she was convinced she was going to get the sack but she thought she was being shit.
Lee Yeah.
Adam When in actual fact it's like, no, I think yeah.
Adam You're doing a very good job.
Chris I think.
Chris Um like I figured.
Chris They're all meant to seem like none of them are.
Chris You know, hero material, it's like they're just normal people.
Chris And so, you almost don't want overacting in it, it's like.
Chris You know, something is descending upon them and and yeah.
Chris And obviously she does well at the end.
Chris Um.
Lee But only out of terror, not out of any sort of.
Chris Yeah, exactly.
Chris And it looks and she and she's and the thing is like you say, Donald Pleasence is the big name in this.
Lee Yeah.
Chris Yeah.
Lee But as you said Adam, their scenes never really cross and his are much less than hers.
Lee Jamie Lee Curtis basically comes out of nowhere and carries this entire movie.
Lee Fantastically.
Lee Um yeah, if ever a film was set to to to kickstart a good career.
Lee This is the one because there's so much focus on her for the, I mean it's only an hour and a half running time.
Lee But as you say, she's in most of the scenes, if if she isn't in them then Donald Pleasence are in them and it just focuses mainly on those two characters.
Lee Everybody else is secondary.
Adam Yeah, there's nobody around those two always.
Lee Yeah.
Chris Yeah.
Adam Yeah, I mean.
Chris Yeah.
Adam Well, I so I was think you know, like mentioning Michael there.
Adam At the start, I mean that's quite a hard hitting start, isn't it?
Adam Showing like what age is he?
Adam Six.
Chris Six yeah, six I was thinking six, seven.
Chris So yeah, and you know, the way that plays straight away it's like, okay, this is pretty serious.
Chris Um.
Chris I guess what I.
Chris I wanted to check.
Chris I I didn't quite know if I'd missed something here, but I didn't really.
Chris See any supernatural elements until the end, is that right?
Lee Yeah.
Adam Yeah.
Chris Okay.
Adam It's it's a weird there's a it's a weird tangled thing, I was I'm actually I was I'm slightly annoyed, I think we should we should have um I should have contacted uh Drew who obviously came in on our Friday the 13th episode.
Adam But Drew is a Halloween Michael Myers.
Adam Like officionado, he's watched through all he's seen all of them.
Adam And it's weird because there's like a basically from what I can gather there there's three Halloween timelines.
Adam That not including Halloween 3 and not including Rob Zombies like remakes, et cetera.
Lee Oh, and the Rob remake, which I'd completely forgotten even existed.
Adam Before.
Adam But there's so so yeah, in the first film Michael Myers is a.
Adam Physical, he's a human being who is committing murders.
Adam I mean, regardless of his you know, the whole thing where they don't have a handle on why he's doing it.
Chris Yeah.
Adam They've it's basically this whole thing that psychoanalysis and everything has completely failed.
Lee Hmm.
Adam And that's really Donald Pleasence's thing where it's like he's gone from trying to trying to work him out.
Chris Figure out, yeah.
Adam To just no, we need to keep this inside because we can't figure this out and this is something wrong.
Adam Or something has gone wrong with this person.
Adam But then it's sort of but like you say, at the very end, he can somehow survive being shot six times.
Chris And stabs him in the neck.
Chris I mean so that's where.
Adam And.
Chris You get a hint that something's up because yeah, she stabs him in the neck with the with the.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And she stabs him with the knife as well.
Chris Yeah.
Chris Yeah.
Adam So it's.
Chris And the coat hanger.
Adam And it's I mean.
Adam That's pretty resourceful.
Lee The other thing as well that I got that I'd never noticed this time, but again, does spoiler alert to Chris, uh there are big hints that there are supernatural things going on that are added in in the later sequels.
Lee Um.
Lee But.
Lee Yeah, the fact that he's been in prison since he was or in the asylum since he was six years old.
Lee Escapes on this one day and somehow manages to.
Lee For now apparent reason, he latches onto Laurie Strode and knows where she goes to school.
Lee Where she works, where she goes home, the way she walks home, like he's there at every turn.
Lee And it I'd never really noticed it until this time and then I suddenly like, why has he picked her?
Lee How is it just it's it's as if he's gone there specifically to go for her and mess with all her friends and everything that surrounds her for no reason.
Adam There's a.
Adam There's a thought that she is the first teenage girl that he sees.
Adam Because he obviously goes back.
Chris Yeah, he takes the keys.
Adam He takes the keys there.
Adam So it's like he because then it's a lot of prowling the streets and driving around.
Adam I mean, it's supposedly a small town, it's like, right, she's a school girl.
Adam There's one school.
Lee That makes sense.
Adam Or, you know, there's the high school or whatever like that.
Lee Yeah, it does.
Adam So.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Which which kind of which it does kind of make us because this is the thing as well where loads of people have attached to.
Adam Um of attached to Halloween, the whole thing of like, uh sex equals death.
Adam So if you have sex, you're going to die, but if you don't, you.
Adam But that doesn't compute because Michael Myers goes after Laurie anyway.
Chris He doesn't manage to kill her in this film.
Adam He doesn't manage to kill her, but but but the but then as.
Adam I think John Carpenter said it's like, everyone else is so wrapped up in their own shit that they've not noticed, it's just that Laurie is sort of like a removed sort of person.
Adam She's a bit sort of awkward.
Lee Yeah.
Adam So she's just got slightly she's slightly more aware.
Adam Whereas everyone else is just busy trying to get laid, so they're not really concentrating.
Adam And and also, I mean, let's face it, I mean, from Dr. Loomis's fucking suggestion, the police don't alert anyone.
Lee Yeah.
Adam You know, which no.
Adam I know there was the thing of oh, they'll see them on every street corner if you announce it.
Adam It's like, yeah, but they might fucking see him.
Lee Yeah.
Adam You know.
Adam And not get murdered by him.
Lee He drives right past you, you Berlin and you just completely I I really like that scene actually, but.
Adam I've forgotten how much he is around.
Adam And weirdly enough, that's another one that I always find, I always find the daylight stuff creepier.
Adam Like when he just stands, when he's standing by the hedge.
Lee Yeah.
Adam And it's just out of focus, because you don't really make out the mask.
Adam Almost till the very end.
Lee Yeah.
Adam It could be it could be a very pale face or it could be a you know, it's not it's never quite seen.
Adam I think it's first really seen when uh he kills uh Bob and Linda.
Adam Um I think that's really when you first sort of see the mask in it's in all its glory.
Adam And it's yeah.
Lee I think it was the sound of it was what got me this time, I don't remember noticing that before.
Lee The scenes where it's from his eyes and it is it's that perfect sound of when you're wearing a mask and you can just hear your own breath reverberate.
Chris Yeah.
Lee Oh.
Lee And it's just so unnerving.
Adam Well because the guy the guy who plays the guy who plays Michael Myers mostly in the film.
Adam Um Nick Castle, who went on to direct the last Star Fighter amongst other films.
Lee Yeah.
Chris Did he?
Adam Yeah.
Adam Um he is also he's also a member of the Coupe DeVille's with uh Tommy Lee Wallace and John Carpenter.
Lee Who famously did the music for big trouble in Little China.
Adam Big trouble.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Man.
Adam But um yeah, and he um uh where is it here? But he turned up again, they got him to play Michael Myers in Halloween 2018.
Adam Like the most recent iteration of it.
Adam Um he plays him.
Adam In a few scenes because obviously he's an older.
Adam He's older so but he played him in a few scenes, but he did he dubbed Michael Myers.
Adam So all the grants and the and the like all the breathing and everything is Nick Castle.
Adam So it's exactly the same as this this one, the first one.
Chris So is the is the remake decent then?
Adam It's not a remake.
Adam This is this is the weird thing with the three timelines.
Chris Oh, right.
Adam Okay.
Adam So, originally you've got this one.
Adam Then there's Halloween 2, which has got um Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence in it.
Adam And it basically takes place on the same night.
Adam Or the night afterwards, it's basically.
Lee I think it's one of those that basically, yeah, like it all starts with the police all arriving at the house.
Adam Yeah.
Lee They basically it it picks up almost immediately from the end of of the first one.
Adam And.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And in that one, it's revealed that the reason he's obsessed with Laurie is because Laurie is actually his younger sister who was born after he was put in the asylum and she was adopted.
Lee Hmm.
Adam So.
Adam But.
Lee But how he knew that from inside a wald is anyone's guess.
Adam Exactly.
Adam Exactly.
Lee Fantastic.
Adam Then obviously you get.
Adam You get Halloween 3, nothing to do with anything else.
Adam But.
Adam So, but then you've got Halloweens 4, 5 and 6, which is The Return of Michael Myers, The Revenge of Michael Myers and The Curse of Michael Myers.
Adam And they've all got Donald Pleasence continuing to follow Michael Myers and try and hunt him down.
Adam And it gets almost commedically mental.
Adam Um I think we did what I can't remember which one we watched.
Adam I think it might have been the revenge or the curse.
Adam And by then Donald is hysterical.
Adam He's like properly he's like he is basically like taking a drunk to find an all night off license.
Adam He's like there, not there, no, stop, he's just.
Adam Yeah, rabbit almost.
Adam But so so that's the continue that was the continuation from the original.
Adam Then.
Adam Uh then they do Halloween H2O, uh which is technically Halloween 7.
Adam And that follows on from Halloween 2, so Laurie Strode's back.
Adam She is Michael Myers's sister and he's tracking her down one last time.
Adam That was then followed by Halloween Resurrection, which is like a continuation from H2O.
Adam Jamie Lee Curtis is in it, but I think she gets killed and Buster Rhymes is in it.
Adam That gives you an indication of quite how sort of.
Chris How it's.
Adam How 2000.
Chris Crap.
Adam That film was.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Um.
Adam Because H2O was obviously.
Adam Was released in 98.
Adam So it was obviously like the 20th anniversary.
Adam But now Halloween 2018.
Adam Which is what I have to keep calling it because it's only called fucking Halloween, which is really helpful, guys.
Adam Thank you.
Adam He's now a direct sequel to the first Halloween, so it cuts out number two, which then cuts out H2O and Resurrection.
Adam And also cuts out 4, 5 and 6.
Adam And they even address in in that one, they address a thing where someone says.
Adam Wasn't Laurie Strode, Michael Myers's sister and they say no, that was like a urban myth.
Adam And they kind of write off the other films as their stories or urban myths that have grown up around the the original film and the incident of the original film.
Lee Hmm.
Adam And now they're going to I need to address it.
Lee And to it and to kind of give it a a reason for this to suddenly pop up in a whole new.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And I mean the great thing is with I mean, I I really.
Adam I really like uh and also you've got I think John Carpenter's.
Adam I mean, he's not heavily involved, but I know that he was he's a he's a producer and he's onset and he did the music.
Adam So there's a lot, you know, he's he's involved.
Chris Yeah.
Adam Um.
Chris Would be interesting, how was it so did did he do the music for 2018?
Chris You said as well.
Adam No, no, Assault on Precinct 13.
Adam Which is a film which is the film he did before Halloween, um which is like a siege movie setting at a police station.
Adam And.
Adam Uh basically again because similarly with this, this was low budget, he did the music out of necessity more than anything else.
Adam But then.
Lee Yeah.
Lee The music for this, the music and sound design, as we said, with the breathing in the mask and all that stuff.
Lee And the music, the sound of this movie is every bit as important as the visuals, the just incredible.
Lee And it's really high in the mix and everything.
Lee Um.
Lee Yeah, but I I think it deserves to be, I think it really amps up, it's great because they put the same music on the kind of stalking scenes as they do on the full on attack scenes.
Lee There's no difference in the music, but it works in both contexts, which is a really strange.
Adam Yeah, it's it's a very.
Lee ability really.
Adam It's a very John Carpenter has a real ability with making a utility theme or like a piece of music.
Adam Which like you say, it works for the slower stuff, it works for the fast attack like the attacks and stuff like that.
Adam It's yeah.
Adam But I I think because um John Carpenter showed like the financial backers the film and they were like, don't think this is going to be a hit.
Adam And he said, well, I haven't done the music for it yet.
Adam And I think he did that he did it in like under a week, he did it in like four days or something.
Adam He wrote.
Lee Oh, my God.
Adam He wrote.
Adam He wrote, recorded and put the music on and then everyone was like, oh my God, this is going to be huge.
Lee Yeah.
Adam And which which indeed it was, I know that I know that um uh what was it?
Adam So, shot in 20 days and it was made for 300,000.
Lee Bloody hell.
Adam It went on to make 47 million.
Chris Hmm.
Adam In the US box office alone.
Lee Jesus.
Adam And that's and that's in the 70s.
Adam So in today's terms the film cost around about 1 1,197,000, but it would have it made the equivalent of like 187 million.
Adam Wow.
Adam It was enormous.
Adam Um and in actual fact this was the most successful independent movie of all time.
Adam Till when was it 1990 when that was beaten by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Lee Ugh.
Adam But there you go.
Adam I mean there's no account of a taste.
Lee I was going to say that just goes to show the box office.
Lee Doesn't necessarily mean quality.
Adam But.
Adam But I mean this was so fucking successful, it's like I mean it also gives you the idea.
Adam It gives you a reason for the impetus of why John Carpenter works consistently throughout the 80s because he's had such an enormous return on this.
Adam And also you can see what that's why the franchise they, you know, the the people who own the rights, they refuse to let this franchise die.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Or sort of.
Adam Because it is a a constant money spinner.
Adam Now the best bit was.
Adam John Carpenter was paid uh 10,000 that included writing, directing and scoring.
Adam But he but he also got a 10% he got 10% of any profits and full creative control.
Adam Uh which was his contract was in his contract for delivering the film on time and on budget, which he did.
Adam So.
Adam Yeah, so he was making 10% of 47 million.
Lee Wow.
Adam Back on it.
Adam And actually and I'm this is someone that I think is.
Adam A part of the this is definitely someone part of the John Carpenter story but also just interesting as well, is the producer who's also the writer who also co-wrote with John Carpenter, Deborah Hill.
Adam She worked for no salary, but took a percentage.
Adam And again.
Adam It's a fucking smart move on this film.
Adam You know, it really is.
Adam And actually because he had because he had creative control, John Carpenter was was able to put John Carpenter's Halloween as the as the title.
Adam So you know, he knew about branding, he knew to keep his name would be up front permanently on this film.
Chris And what else did he done?
Adam Um.
Chris No, before this.
Adam Uh he'd only really done he'd done Dark Star and Assault on Precinct 13 and I think a TV movie called.
Adam Uh someone to watch over me or something like that.
Adam Or somebody's watching.
Chris Okay.
Chris So.
Chris Nothing.
Adam He hadn't no, this was his this was his first real sort of major.
Chris And having his name on it like that probably did.
Adam This was definitely his.
Adam First major and also I don't I don't remember Sam Loomis in psycho.
Adam He ran a hardware store, I don't think he was on his way to psychiatric or medical school.
Lee Yeah, I don't think that's something you can pick up at night school in two years, I think that's pretty much a full on vocation really.
Adam Yeah.
Adam So yeah.
Adam So yeah, because actually yeah, because if it he meets him if he meets him as a six-year-old.
Adam That would have been 1963, which was three years after the events of Psycho.
Adam So.
Adam He did a lot in that time.
Adam And also I don't.
