3:30 Adam I was aware of the Creepy Pasta.

3:32 Adam I was aware that there was the videos on YouTube that were sort of like a few sort of

3:39 Adam you know, little sort of mini films, like sort of shorts and stuff like that, you know.

3:50 Adam Um, but it wasn't something that I particularly was that aware of.

3:55 Adam So I went in with a sort of caveat of, you know, could be good, could be bad, whatever.

4:04 Adam but it's it was, um, it's A24, so you kind of you you sort of trust it, apart from, I don't know if you saw the thing the other week that A24 are, uh,

4:17 Adam working with uh, working with Google to improve AI tools for filmmaking.

4:24 Adam Which has caused something of a backlash of loads of including um, the director of the Backrooms came past and basically saying,

4:32 Adam No, I don't want to do that because creating's the fun bit.

4:37 Lee Yeah.

4:38 Adam You know, So but regardless of where where where they are with that, it's, you know, it's a it's a name that you tend to trust.

4:46 Adam And, um, yeah, I was

4:50 Adam I was really impressed with it.

4:52 Adam There was, um,

4:54 Adam so, as I say, it was Kane Parsons who's directed it, who also did like the short films online.

5:01 Adam He's only 20, the bastard.

5:03 Adam And, you know, already is sort of like, because that that was the genuine most horrific moment is

5:10 Adam watching a good horror film directed by a 20-year-old and going, yes, I am an ancient old fart who's squandered everything that they've ever done.

5:18 Adam And I think it's an interesting sort of, I think his age is an interesting sort of part to it.

5:32 Adam Is that essentially the idea of you go into this other world where you are trapped with the detritus of the 20th century.

5:47 Adam Kind of feels like what it must be like to wander around online at the age of 20 that you sort of like, why is there what what is the why are there of forums of people going, do you remember Thundercats?

5:58 Adam And, you know, sort of and just all all this crap and basically sort of like, yeah, there's there's a lot of awful things happening online and it's a lot of older people doing it who who are who are disappointed with their lives, you know.

6:11 Adam So you can't help but feel that it's sort of but I mean, visually I think it was really good and,

6:17 Adam so the stars were, uh,

6:22 Adam uh, Renata Reinsve, who I'm not who's not someone I've been aware of before.

6:33 Adam And she plays a, um, like psychologist or a therapist who is dealing with one of her customers,

6:41 Adam um, who is played by Chetel Ejiofor, uh, who is

6:50 Adam a fantastic fucking actor, I mean, he's

6:54 Adam The thing I would really recommend people to go and seek out if they enjoy him in this is go and find The Shadow Line, which was a BBC drama from a few years back.

7:07 Adam And he he was like the he was the main character in it, but it had like Stephen Ray in it and Christopher Eccleston and Ray uh Spall and stuff like that.

7:15 Adam And they were just

7:17 Adam and a really good like throwback old sort of like, holy shit, you've got to watch this like, you know, this is not casual viewing, this is

7:28 Adam plots within plots and twists within twists and shit going down, like sort of about a criminal enterprise, but that's besides the point.

7:36 Adam But uh, yeah.

7:38 Adam So and he plays a uh, guy who runs a furniture store and obviously the original

7:45 Adam Creepy Pasta of the Backrooms was a picture of an old furniture store that had just had everything removed and someone took the picture and put it up as you can pass into the Backrooms and you are trapped in this dimension for you know, this weird dimension forever.

7:58 Adam And so they kind of play with that in that it's a man who runs

8:04 Adam a furniture store then oddly discovers this passageway into this

8:13 Adam other dimension, this eerie space, you know, something that's, um,

8:18 Adam that has terrible scary things in it.

8:22 Adam And and again, there's sort of stuff in there.

8:24 Adam Like it's there's sort of talk about there's it's like there's it parts parts of the Backroom are things that they're remembrances of people, but they're remembered poorly or remembered wrong.

8:36 Adam And it's like, and again, you you sort of feel, is that is that a dig at AI?

8:42 Lee Yeah.

8:43 Adam Because it's because it's like it'll be someone, but they've got a glitched face and they can't talk.

8:49 Adam And you're like, yeah, it's you kind of have got it right.

8:54 Adam But you haven't quite got it right.

8:56 Adam It's the same, you know, it's like, we can't do hands, you know.

8:58 Adam It's like that.

9:01 Adam Um, but yeah, all in all, I think and very sort of atmospheric.

9:06 Adam I think towards the end they get a bit too a bit too explainy, if anything.

9:14 Adam I think that Not not in a bad way.

9:16 Adam But I think that there I don't know whether it was a concern that they were like, is this going to be too esoteric, so we'll have a bit where someone is saying some of the rules and boundaries and things that go on in the rather than

9:31 Adam it naturally coming from you see people encounter things and work out the logic and stuff like that.

9:38 Adam but I mean, certainly really, really worth a watch.

9:42 Adam And the end credit music was the new Boards of Canada album that had just come out the track off of there.

9:47 Adam So, you know, immediately, I think it's like Sinister, you end with the Boards of Canada track and I think you're doing your job right probably.

9:56 Adam you know.

9:57 Adam Um, the one thing I would say is, and I've seen a few people complain about it.

10:03 Adam There are people saying, oh, the backrooms, it's a liminal space.

10:05 Adam No, it's not, a liminal space is a transition area or a boundary or a threshold.

10:11 Adam It's not that the bit where you pass through the wall, that's the liminal space, but the rest of the Backrooms itself is just a whole other creepy ball game.

10:19 Adam But yeah, and and it was just one of those things where

10:22 Adam a bit like, you know, how there was sort of you wanted to go around the building in Squid Game.

10:31 Lee Yeah.

10:32 Adam Same thing with this, I just wanted to go around the sets and sort of like to experience it because it just looks so

10:39 Adam odd and so sort of vivid.

10:42 Adam So, yeah.

10:43 Adam But um, no, a definite recommend.

10:45 Adam I think they're I think they're setting up to do more.

10:50 Jennifer Oh, that was, yeah.

10:51 Adam whether that was Yeah, I was like, yeah.

10:58 Adam I think well presumably they'll have to do the front rooms, which will be the prequel.

11:05 Adam But yeah, I mean, as as to whether it'll be diminishing returns or whether they'll sort of go with it you know, it will sort of add to it or whatever like that.

11:14 Adam yeah, I think that it I think it could go somewhere, definitely.

11:19 Adam Definitely, uh, definitely worth a watch, definitely worth a watch.

11:22 Lee Yeah, I think when that comes out on streaming, I think I'm definitely going to check that out because um,

11:26 Lee yeah, a few people have seen it now and I've heard nothing but good things about it.

11:31 Lee So again, it was one of those I was like, it's it's a creepy pastor that's basically come from a single photograph, and I'm like, can you really stretch that out?

11:40 Lee But yeah, everybody who I've spoken to who's seen it, said, yeah, no, they did a really good job of making it atmospheric and sinister, so.

11:47 Adam Yeah, because I I'd like to say, because I think the guy that Kane Parsons who directed it had sort of done the YouTube things.

11:53 Adam But again, you do worry because it's like five minutes of, you know, POV shaky cam versus

12:02 Adam a two-hour movie, you know, it it doesn't necessarily they don't necessarily pan out that well.

12:31 Adam Because I think if I if I remember rightly, I had to because I think there was also I had to give you your birthday present at the same time as Christmas.

12:43 Jennifer But uh, yeah, just picked it up last week, um, it's by Peter Laws.

12:55 Jennifer Um, it's called The Frighteners.

12:58 Jennifer And the the tag line, as it were, is why we love monsters, ghosts, death and gore.

13:03 Jennifer Um, and it's uh, Peter Laws, who's an ordained reverend.

13:08 Jennifer That always makes it a little bit like, what's he doing being into scary stuff?

13:12 Jennifer But it's it's his sort of, you know, conversation through his life and his kind of, you know, going to Transylvania for a holiday because obsessed with horror and growing up and what he was obsessed with as kids.

13:22 Jennifer Mentions the um, what's it called the Dark and Stormy Waters.

13:26 Lee Oh.

13:26 Jennifer Yeah.

13:27 Lee Yeah.

13:27 Jennifer Yeah, that classic, you know, and the things that perhaps encouraged our generation I think that's why. Yeah. um, you know, to to like horror.

13:37 Jennifer And then it goes into quite a lot of sort of psychological stuff.

13:40 Jennifer Kind of debates as to, you know, if we're kind of, you know, wrapping children nowadays in cotton wool.

13:45 Jennifer And not letting them experience.

13:47 Jennifer You know, he says horror is a way of experiencing bad things.

13:50 Jennifer But in a safe environment.

13:52 Jennifer So actually if we're stopping children do that.

13:55 Jennifer Are we not giving them those tools?

13:58 Lee This is what we've been.

13:58 Jennifer with, you know, the real world because unfortunately bad things do happen.

14:01 Jennifer So I say it's a really interesting sort of narrative on that.

14:05 Jennifer Um, and say it covers, you know, serial killers, um, you know, scare rooms.

14:11 Jennifer Um,

14:13 Jennifer all sorts of sort of ranges of different bits of horror, zombies, werewolves, you know.

14:20 Jennifer And again, he goes to different places and talks to people that think they're werewolves.

14:23 Jennifer Or think they're vampires.

14:26 Jennifer So it's a nice range of of stuff.

14:30 Jennifer I'm not quite finished it yet.

14:32 Jennifer But yeah, definitely definitely worth a read, very interesting.

14:36 Jennifer So, yeah.

14:38 Adam Yeah, because he's the he's the horror movie, um,

14:42 Adam uh, like reviewer for For Times.

14:45 Adam Yeah, so yeah, that's where I first sort of like encountered him, yeah.

14:48 Jennifer Yeah, no, he's got a good sort of narrative going on and, uh, yeah, lots of say interesting things and things that you sort of know of a bit and then he sort of puts his own views on it.

15:41 Lee I am currently both reading his new book Solace House, uh, while listening to season two, which we've just finished of Broken Veil.

15:56 Adam So Broken Vile, both actually, I finished I finished Solace House, um,

16:33 Lee I love his the thing I loved about him with his first book as well, he's got such a good descriptive, like the way he describes things, I really enjoy, I think it's really nice.

16:45 Lee But this is characters are the thing that gets me, all the characters he writes feel so real.

16:52 Lee Like everybody knows that person, everyone knows the posh twat who's, you know, just who hangs out with all the all the, you know, those of us who are of a lower class and all, and those who don't have to live like that, but do just because they want to be a.

17:16 Lee Um, but yeah, and and you know, as well as the person who wants to be weird and isn't like he his characters are just incredible.

17:35 Lee I've just bought that again for another friend of mine who hadn't read it.

17:40 Lee Um, because I mentioned I said, oh, I had this book and it was so amazing, I've lent it to all of my friends.

17:45 Lee And he looked at me so brokenhearted and you went, you never lent it to me.

17:47 Lee I was like, I hadn't seen you for six months, so next time I saw him, I had to buy a copy for him to make up for it.

17:55 Lee but yeah, so Solace House is great.

17:56 Lee But yeah, so Broken Vale season two.

18:02 Lee I went in with low expectations because

18:05 Lee the first season was so amazing, it felt like they'd wrapped that story up.

18:11 Lee So I was like, they're going to do something completely different, completely stand alone, uh, and I'd be surprised if they could do anything as good again because, as I've said, that blew me away so, so fucking.

18:20 Jennifer Plus I kind of think part of that was not quite knowing how real it was or not.

18:25 Jennifer You kind of.

18:26 Jennifer You're a bit like, are they just going out and doing this for real? So I guess once that was over, you sort of realized, so I wondered if this one would work in the same way or not.

18:34 Lee Um, I I felt it was.

18:36 Lee It was as good as the first season.

18:38 Lee It was so, so good.

18:39 Lee different enough.

18:40 Lee To not feel like they're just rehash what they did the first time, but it's it's set in the same world.

18:46 Lee And it had that same thing as well.

18:48 Lee Of you'd have long periods of what not mundane, but like very real feeling, we did this, we did this, we did that and then every now and again something so surreal and fucked up had just landed on it.

18:57 Lee It's coming and just shatter it all, and it was just brilliantly put together.

19:04 Lee I loved the soundscapes and everything they put in there.

19:10 Lee We sat outside in the garden, listened to it on an like sat outside, eating and drinking with a

19:23 Adam I mean, that's the thing is I'm listening to it I was listening to it on the way into um like just in the car on the way to work.

19:40 Adam and once again, it was back to, because obviously you guys have sort of binged it.

19:51 Adam I was listening to it as they released and, oh,

19:56 Adam fuck me, was it a long week?

22:18 Adam And he played a vicar who basically Sean Lock's character had smashed up a uh the local churchyard by accident and then the vicar the vicar knew it was him from CCTV and he said, well, I'll let you off if you come out for a drink with me.

22:29 Adam And then just proceeded to be the most nightmare person to go for a fucking drink with and it was just the it was just the one bit where he said, it's not me, he's going to hell, is it?

22:39 Adam No, it's not me who's going to be sitting in a lake of turds and wasps.

22:42 Adam And yeah.

22:43 Adam And I just

22:44 Adam I love I love I loved and I loved him and his co-worker's relationship.

22:52 Adam fucking brilliant, especially these days because the trouble is, is there's a Dr. Who fan and it's like, oh, here we go, the companion fancies the doctor, the doctor fancies the companion.

23:09 Adam But yeah, with with with Broken Veil, I was sort of like, because the first coup I think the first two episodes, I was like,

23:16 Adam Weeks in between to sort of mull over and stuff like that.

23:21 Adam And I was like, have they gone too far in trying to not.

23:24 Jennifer Yeah, not.

23:25 Adam repeat themselves.

23:26 Adam Which,

23:27 Adam let's face it, there was no way you could do that again because it's it was very much one of its one of a kind sort of thing, but also I don't think they would want to do that.

23:38 Adam You know, I think they've I think they're too sort of.

23:43 Adam Their quality control is just too high that they would want to do that.

23:48 Adam So but I was kind of like, oh, you're trying yourselves up in not trying to not do that.

23:54 Adam Which in effect became part of the plot.

23:57 Adam Because it was them saying, look, oh, are we are we making the mistake because they, you know, it was in in there that they were deliberately not trying to follow the same path again.

24:11 Adam I mean, again, no spoilers.

24:13 Adam Although it has been if you get in quick, if you don't want because obviously we could only you can only listen to it if you're a subscriber.

27:12 Adam But yeah, rewatching Psychoville obviously Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton's uh sort of it's their Filthy Rich and Cat Flap, it's what happens between uh League of Gentlemen and um Inside Number Nine.

27:31 Adam And again, watching that, I was reminded of watching it the first time around.

27:35 Adam And actually it was it really did the job of getting you intrigued in the mystery.

27:40 Adam And in the sort of not just the jokes and not just the sort of characters.

27:46 Adam Um, and but moved away from that sort of thing because obviously the league is essentially a sketch show.

27:52 Adam Um, but yeah, Psychoville they sort of actually have a proper throughput narrative.

29:18 Jennifer In a room like not just for orange, didn't you, the eyes strapped over, you watched all of these things and then he still want to marry me.

29:24 Adam And I think that's a perfectly acceptable way of.

29:28 Adam Yeah, and um, but she yeah, so um,

29:31 Adam so I think again it was like watching it and going, oh yeah, Christ, I remember sitting there going, what the fuck is the psychic the uh, Silent Singer?

29:39 Adam And all these sort of bits and pieces that you were sort of like, you know, again, it's a lot there was a lot in there.

29:46 Adam at some point, we do need to do the Halloween special.
